The Internet heavily relies on unique number identifiers like Internet Protocol (IP) address space (IPv4 and IPv6) and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) to connect networks and devices. In the early 1990s, assigning IP addresses was managed by a single individual named Jon Postel of late memory, who maintained a list of assigned network addresses using a paper notebook.
